HOW IT WORKS

Conversion should be
clear, not mysterious.

PaperShift reads the content exposed by your PDF and reconstructs it as editable Word paragraphs and text runs. Here's what happens behind the button.

1. Upload and validate

Choose a PDF from your device. The server checks the file signature, size, and page count before attempting conversion. The current starter configuration accepts files up to 25 MB and 100 pages. These limits are configurable with environment variables and should be adjusted to match the capacity of your deployment.

2. Read the PDF structure

PDFs usually store text as positioned glyphs and drawing operations rather than as the semantic paragraphs found in a Word document. PaperShift uses PyMuPDF to read text blocks, lines, spans, font names, font sizes, colors, and basic style flags. This information helps the converter rebuild text in a more editable form.

3. Reconstruct Word content

The converter creates a DOCX document with paragraph and run elements. It maps detected text styling to Word font properties, estimates likely headings, and adds page breaks to retain the broad page-by-page flow. It also attempts to include extracted raster images. This is a practical reconstruction—not a promise of pixel-identical output.

4. Download and verify

The finished DOCX is streamed directly to your browser. Open it in Microsoft Word or a compatible editor. Compare it with the PDF, paying special attention to line wrapping, margins, tables, image positions, footnotes, headers, footers, and page numbering. If a document is for a client, legal use, print, or publication, a final proofread is essential.

How to get the best result

What the current version does not guarantee

PDF-to-Word conversion is inherently approximate. A PDF can position each character independently, while Word reflows content according to fonts, page size, paragraph settings, and available space. The current release does not include OCR, exact coordinate-based layout, robust table recognition, mathematical equation reconstruction, or guaranteed header/footer preservation. The app is structured so these capabilities can be added as separate processing modules.

Privacy by design

Uploads are processed in memory for the conversion request and are not written to a permanent application upload directory. In a production deployment, you should also configure reverse-proxy body limits, request timeouts, rate limiting, log hygiene, and hosting retention policies. Avoid sending sensitive client documents to any tool unless you have permission and an appropriate data-handling policy.
